Programs & Ministries

We want you to be a part of the congregation life and ministry of Hope Lutheran Church.  There are many opportunities to serve and help carry out the mission of Hope Lutheran Church.  The general life and activities of the congregation are carried out by people who serve in specific ministries.

 

What's Your Passion?

Everyone of us has a lifetime of experience to share with one another. You are invited to share your talents and interests with other members of Hope by joining one of the many ministry teams available for both fellowship and service. Select an area of interest  from the six major ministry areas listed below and you will find an appropriate opportunity description:

BUILDING AND GROUNDS

AUDIO/VISUAL TEAM
This team is responsible for the media operations conducted in the sound booth at Hope worship  services and special events.

GARDEN TEAM
The team members meet three or four times per year to implement and manage a flower-planting program for the exterior grounds. Team members share the responsibility of caring for the plants and flowers.

MEMORIAL GARDEN
T
his team has the responsibility for the design and implementation of a memorial garden on church property for the purpose of providing Hope members with an interment place for the ashes of loved ones.

INTERIOR DESIGN
This team functions to provide a coordinated approach to the appearance of the various exhibits in the church Narthex and other areas of the church.

The Building and Grounds Team will also function as a combined "Building Team" developed for any future construction projects

FINANCE, ADMINISTRATION SUPPORT

AUDIT TEAM
The audit team verifies correctness of year-end financial reports. The church's assets are identified and controlled. Controls for receipts and disbursements are examined; recommendations for improvements suggested. Time commitment required: 7 - 9 hours, depending on experience of Audit Team, 3 - 5 meetings.

HUMAN RESOURCES TEAM
This team works to encourage adoption of policy and human resource management to achieve the mission and goals of the church. It also serves to assure compliance with labor related areas of the law within the day-to-day employee process. The team meets on an as needed basis.

GROUPS, EDUCATION, RECREATION

CLOWN MINISTRY:
"Steeple People" Hope members along with others from the community visit local assisted living facilities. They get involved in conducting prayer meetings, holding parties and leading services at churches. Team members participated in The Blessing of the Animals at Hope. Team Leaders Carl and Ray Day provide training through The Village College of Clowning.

COUPLES' BRIDGE:
This group meets the 2nd Sunday evening of each month.

DINING OUT:
Meet different people from Hope each month and dine at various locations in small groups of six or seven.

GRIEF SUPPORT:
Six-week course. Group is led by Pastor Bill Corkish. See Hope University

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Our team mission is to help convert poverty housing to habitat housing. The time required is directly proportional to churches sponsoring homes. Many of our church members have volunteered to help with building a Habitat home.  Habitat volunteering offers a great opportunity to become directly involved in helping others.

HOPE 101:
Six-week course on Lutheranism led by Pastor Bill Corkish. See Hope University.

HOPE CRAFTERS:
This group meets on Tuesdays at 10:00am in the Fellowship Hall.

HOPE UNIVERSITY:
Hope "U" offers many bible studies, one-day seminars, etc. to uplift your spiritual life.. See Hope University.

LADIES' BRIDGE:
Meets the 2nd Monday of the month at 1:00pm in the Fellowship Hall.

LIBRARY:
The Library of Hope Lutheran Church is intended to supply literature and related materials needed for, or useful to, church members and organizations. Time is required to identify and catalogue materials and to present them for use. The time required is probably 5 to 15 hours a month, at the leisure of those involved.

SINGLES OF HOPE:
This group calls themselves the "Hope Diamond"  Their purpose is to provide a social environment  for fellowship and fun Hope members without partners. Meetings are on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 2:00pm.

SPECIAL EVENTS/HOSPITALITY TEAM
Activities special to the fellowship functions of the congregation are planned and organized by this team. The events include potluck suppers and other types of dinners, new member orientations and receptions, and coffee and refreshments following Sunday services. Responsibilities are assigned by Team Leaders and shared among team members.

MISSION/OUTREACH

ANGEL TREE
Once a year project to provide Hope members the opportunity to support Sumter County School Readiness Coalition in a project to supply Christmas gifts to needy children. The project requires a team of at least three members beginning in September concluding in December. A detailed "task description" is available for further information.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
A once-a-year event held in October to offer a "blessing service" as a gift to the community and to Hope members. All Teams of the congregation are encouraged to participate along with members whose special interests include "God's creatures great and small".

FIRST- TIME CALLING COMMITTEE
This team calls on the phone to people who attend Hope for the first time. The time required for the phone calls varies on the number of first-timers who attended worship services. It usually requires three to four hours per week 

GLOBAL MISSION TEAM
The mission of the Global Mission Team is to provide leadership, awareness, and involvement in local, regional, and global missions. The team manages a budget and oversees the gathering and sending of funds to specific causes. This team meets monthly for one to two hours, September through May. Personal involvement of members with a specific mission - one hour a month - report to committee at monthly meetings. Committee preparations for special events: five to ten hours per year.

(H)OME (A)CQUAINTANCE (M)EETING
Hope Acquaintance Meetings are held by Pastor Barry Hunteman: Meetings are scheduled for small groups of new members after they have been received.

NEW MEMBER PREPARATION TEAM
Members of this team contact persons who have indicated a desire to join Hope. By way of a telephone interview, the team member provides information about the procedure for joining Hope Lutheran Church and gathers data for the Member Information Form. The team member also invites current members to be sponsors to the new members. Time required for completing the interview process and selecting sponsors can take up to two hours. New members are received 4/5 times per year.

ARCHIVIST
The archivist provides the congregation with a historical continuity of the operations of Hope Lutheran Church from its beginning in 1998

VOLUNTEER MINISTRY
The goal of the Volunteer Ministry Team is to encourage and assist each member of Hope to be actively involved in the life and mission of our congregation. The Team takes part in the New Member Orientation meetings, providing the opportunity for new members to select an area of ministry of their choice. The Team members refer all volunteers to appropriate Team Leaders and follow up on the assignments. Records of all teams and volunteers are maintained. Providing information to team leaders who request volunteers is another task of the team. Time required: 2 hours to process records and make referrals after each group of new members have joined (4/5 times per year). Several hours as needed to provide information to team leaders.

WELCOME TEAM
The Welcome Team is responsible for assuring that each first-time visitor is acknowledged. Team members provide each first-time visitor with a handmade, keepsake cross, along with a name tag that identifies them as a visitor. Teams members greet in the narthex prior to Saturday and Sunday worship services.

SHEPHERDS/VISITING

NEIGHBORHOOD CARE TEAM
In the spirit of our caring congregation, the mission of the Neighborhood Care Team is to provide help and support those parishioners in need in their immediate neighborhoods. Members of the team will provide special services for shut-ins, as well as other "good neighbor" services . They  also provide transportation for medical reasons or for necessary personal errands.

FUNERAL RECEPTION TEAM
The mission of this team is to provide food and beverages for a funeral/memorial luncheon or dinner. This may be at the church or in a person's home. They call six to seven groups for the food items, help in setting up, and they clean up afterwards.. The time involved is from two to three hours per funeral or memorial.

HOPE FOR THE HUNGRY
The Hope for the Hungry Team collects and delivers food items to area food shelves. They coordinate the collection of donated food on the first Sunday of the month and deliver the items to the Wildwood Sunset Church of God, which  service three area communities.

MEN OF HOPE
The mission of "Men of Hope" is to provide a Christ-centered fellowship for all the male members of the Hope Lutheran Congregation. "Men of Hope" will also offer opportunities for the men to share their gifts with people in need. The Men of Hope meet on the second Wednesday of each month.

PRAYER CHAIN TEAM
The Prayer Chain Team prays for members, friends, and family, as requested, including those on the prayer list in the weekly newsletter. When requests are received, all members of the Prayer Team are informed of the situations and prayer begins immediately. The time required to fulfill the duties of a Prayer Chain Team Member varies, but consists of receiving and making calls regarding requests and spending time in prayer.

STEWARDSHIP TEAM
Stewardship is "everything I do after I say I believe." The Stewardship Team has four areas of responsibility: the financial component; the education component; the promotion component; the commitment component. The time commitment for Stewardship team members is 10 monthly meetings per year (3rd Wednesday of the month at 2 p.m.) and 1 - 3 special project meetings per year.

WOMEN OF HOPE
The mission of the Women of Hope is to come together for study, support, and actions through mission projects for the community and church-wide women's organizations. Women of Hope meet monthly, on the third Thursday morning, for a light breakfast and a meeting that features a speaker, progress reports on all ongoing missions, and fellowship with one another. Meetings usually last under two hours. All women of Hope are members of Women of Hope.

WORSHIP AND MUSIC

ALTAR ANGELS
This team is responsible for making ready the Altar for all services - general service, communion service, healing service, and others as required. We store and maintain the altar paraments, altar cloths, brass, and candles. Additionally, we maintain the flower chart and order flowers.  Team members are scheduled one month at a time, which equates to about one hour per week during the scheduled month.

ASSISTING MINISTERS/COMMUNION SERVER
This team is responsible for helping lead worship. Assisting Ministers assist the Pastor with liturgy and prayers as well as with communion. The Communion Servers assist in the distribution of the sacraments. Some of the team members assit with the Rite of Healing. At this time there are 46 volunteers on this team. The time required is during regular worship on Sunday/Saturday, once or twice a month. There is occasional need to serve at additional services, such as during Lent or on Festival days.

BANNER TEAM
The Banner Team meets when needed to assemble banners for the church, usually 3 or 4 times a year. Each banner takes approximately 6 to 12 hours to complete. New members need to know how to trace, cut, measure, and glue to join other team members. No sewing is involved. We can always use new ideas and suggestions.

GREETER TEAM
This team leader calls the members who have indicated a desire to be a greeter. The greeters provide a welcoming, smiling face to each person as they enter the church to worship. They give them directions, if needed. The time involved for the team leader can be from one to three or four hours a month.

READER TEAM
Members of the Reader Team share the Lessons of the Day from the Bible with the congregation at each worship. Members are normally scheduled to read at a regular worship service on a quarterly basis.

SPIRIT RINGERS (SEE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRIES)
This is the chime choir at Hope. Similar in technique to bells, the chimes produce a beautiful tone that compliments the worship experience. Ringers play two or more chimes and the ability to read music is strongly suggested.

SPIRIT SINGERS (SEE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRIES)
This is a ladies' ensemble, which provides special music for services throughout the year. Vocal selections are written for 3-parts: soprano, 2nd soprano and alto. Rehearsals are held on Monday afternoons from 2pm-2:45pm.

USHER TEAM
This team has three sub-teams: Head Usher; Lead Ushers; Usher at Large. The ushers assist people attending church, and assist the Pastor and his assistants with communion and rite of healing. Ushers report to church 45 minutes to one hour before services to prepare the church for communion, prepare the Order of Service and Newsletters, and take care of any other needs for a particular Sunday. Ushers are provided for special services during the special seasons of the year.

SOUNDS OF HOPE
This group sings at the 4pm worship service on Saturdays. It is a smaller ensemble than Voices of Hope and rehearses  at 2:30pm. Most of the repertoire is in 2-3 parts, and one anthem is prepared and sung each week.

VOICES OF HOPE
This group provides music for the Sunday morning worship services. This is the largest choir and singers experience a variety of repertoire from classic to contemporary. Arrangements are written for 4-parts: soprano, alto, tenor and bass; solo opportunities area also available. The Voices of Hope rehearse on Thursday evenings at 7pm.
